Rationale
The Education 2.0 reform, launched in 2018, is the government's flagship national curriculum transformation, moving Egyptian schooling from rote, exam-driven instruction to a competency-based, multidisciplinary, technology-enabled model built on a UNICEF life-skills framework. The reform includes an explicit multi-year teacher professional-development program, making it the stated PD priority of the Ministry of Education and Technical Education. Participants examine the research base for active learning: inquiry-based instruction, discussion, collaborative problem-solving, and project-based learning produce deeper understanding than lecture and recitation. The lesson presents a repertoire of student-centred strategies suitable for the Egyptian classroom: think-pair-share, jigsaw, structured debate, guided inquiry, and learning stations. Lesson 6. Character and behaviour development

Participants study the reform's character framework: respect, responsibility, honesty, empathy, perseverance, and citizenship. They learn how to integrate character outcomes into subject lessons by selecting a character trait relevant to the lesson content, designing activities that require students to practise that trait, and using debriefing questions that draw out the character learning. Participants examine sample lesson plans from the national curriculum that embed character outcomes and critique them for authenticity and depth. This lesson focuses on the Education 2.0 rollout in the early grades (KG through Grade 3), where foundational literacy and numeracy are the priority. Participants study the reform's phased approach: the curriculum was first introduced in KG and Grade 1, then rolled out grade by grade. The lesson presents the science competencies: asking questions, planning investigations, collecting and analysing data, constructing explanations, and communicating findings. Participants examine sample science units from the national curriculum that integrate science with mathematics, Arabic literacy, and social studies around a theme such as water, energy, or health. Part III: Application and Mastery (Lessons 11-15)
Lesson 11. Purposeful use of the digital learning bank
This lesson addresses the technology-enabled dimension of Education 2.0, focusing on the national digital learning bank and other approved digital resources. Participants study the reform's vision for technology: not as a replacement for the teacher but as a tool for expanding access, personalising learning, and developing digital literacy. Lesson 12. Managing the competency-based classroom

Lesson 13. Adapting the reform for large and under-resourced classes
This lesson addresses the most common implementation challenge Egyptian teachers face: enacting Education 2.0 in large classes with limited materials and space. Participants study the implementation literature on EDU 2.0, which documents the gap between the reform's ideal and the reality of overcrowded classrooms. The lesson presents practical adaptations: using peer tutoring and small-group structures within a large class, designing low-cost manipulatives from local materials, using the physical environment flexibly, and prioritising the highest-impact competency activities. Participants work in groups to solve a specific implementation problem: how to conduct a science investigation with 50 students and no laboratory, or how to facilitate a class discussion with 60 students and limited time. They generate solutions and share them with the whole group. The lesson also addresses the emotional labour of teaching in difficult conditions and presents strategies for teacher self-care and peer support. Lesson 14. Evidencing reform-aligned practice for the cadre
This lesson connects classroom practice to the teacher cadre promotion system under Law 155/2007. Participants learn that cadre promotion requires demonstrated evidence of performance and training, and that reform-aligned practice is increasingly the standard against which performance is judged. The lesson presents a framework for documenting practice: lesson plans that show backward design from competencies, student work samples that evidence competency development, assessment tasks that are formative and competency-based, and reflective notes that analyse teaching effectiveness. Participants examine sample portfolio entries from teachers who have successfully documented reform-aligned practice. Lesson 15. A unit-design capstone
This lesson is the summative assessment for the course. Participants work individually or in pairs to design a full competency-based, multidisciplinary unit plan that demonstrates mastery of the course content. The unit must include: a thematic focus that integrates at least two subject areas, a backward-design structure from competency to assessment to instruction, at least three student-centred learning activities, an embedded character-development component, a purposeful use of a digital resource from the national bank, and an adaptation for large or under-resourced classes. Participants present their unit plans to a peer review group, receiving constructive feedback on alignment, feasibility, and depth. They then revise their plans based on the feedback. The lesson concludes with a whole-group discussion of the challenges and opportunities of enacting Education 2.0 in Egyptian schools and a commitment to continued professional learning. By the end of the lesson, participants can produce a complete, competency-based, multidisciplinary unit plan that is ready for classroom implementation and suitable for inclusion in a PAT portfolio.
